As technology progresses, AI-driven military equipment becomes more adept at decision-making. This efficiency can lead to precision and reduced casualties in combat but also poses the risk of AI systems misinterpreting data, which could trigger unwarranted aggression or escalation of conflicts. Furthermore, these technologies present a challenge to international law, specifically how norms of warfare adapt to machines that can decide and act. Countries and organizations worldwide are grappling with the governance of military AI. While some advocate a preemptive ban on lethal autonomous weapon systems, others suggest a regulatory approach to ensure human oversight. International cooperation is crucial in establishing regulations, but reaching consensus remains a complex task due to differences in military capabilities and strategic interests. Moreover, non-state actors may access AI technology, complicating global security dynamics. As AI’s role in warfare becomes more entrenched, the window for reaching international agreements narrows. The international community thus faces an urgent need to create frameworks to mitigate risks associated with military AI and to promote responsible use of these technologies in warfare to prevent potential future calamities.
