AI Use at Work Has Nearly Doubled in Two Years
Over the last two years, the incorporation of AI into American workplaces has significantly increased. Specifically, the proportion of employees who utilize AI in their tasks at least several times annually has risen from 21% to 40%. More frequent usage, defined as several times weekly, has similarly grown from 11% to 19% since initial assessments in 2023. Daily engagement with AI has doubled within just a year, moving from 4% to 8%. Predominantly, white-collar roles exhibit this uptick in AI integration, with 27% asserting frequent interaction with AI—an increase of 12 percentage points since 2024. Notably, technology, professional services, and finance sectors lead with the highest percentages of AI engagement. Contrary to this trend, production and frontline workers have not experienced a similar surge, with a slight drop from 11% to 9%. The managerial cadre, especially those at higher levels, display an even greater propensity for AI use, reaching 33%. Despite these advancements, apprehension regarding job displacement due to AI remains steady. Only 15% of employees express a belief that AI or related technologies might threaten their jobs within five years—a sentiment unchanged from earlier years. However, certain industries, including technology, retail, and finance, reflect higher anxiety levels. Yet, only 44% of organizations report any integration of AI, with even less having established clear strategies. The gap between AI implementation and guidance marks a major challenge, with only 30% reporting any guidelines on AI use. Consequently, to maximize AI's potential, leadership must offer clearer directions and support to contextualize AI's benefits and applications effectively for employees.
