Figure AI founder Brett Adcock says there will soon be as many humanoid robots as humans

Brett Adcock, the founder of Figure AI, a company specializing in robotics, envisions a near future where humanoid robots become as widespread as humans. He believes the integration of these robots into everyday life, including homes, is just a few years away, owing to recent technological advancements. In a tech podcast, Adcock discussed how improvements in hardware and neural networks—models designed to mimic brain functions—are making humanoid robots a feasible reality. He cited an upgrade to their humanoid robot, Helix, which can now perform an hour of logistics tasks uninterrupted, showing considerable progress in speed and performance. Helix's capabilities have been enhanced with touch and short-term memory, further advancing its efficiency over time. Investments in robotics are on the rise, with $6.1 billion directed towards this sector in 2024 alone. Figure AI, founded in 2022, has successfully raised $2.34 billion, with substantial contributions from prominent companies like Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Amazon's Jeff Bezos. Adcock notes that the perception of deep tech has shifted significantly over the last seven years, with investors increasingly recognizing its potential to become one of the world's largest industries. While other companies like Tesla and Boston Dynamics are also making strides in the development of humanoid robots with diverse capabilities, Figure AI's mission focuses on creating general-purpose humanoids that enhance human life and take over undesirable or unsafe jobs. However, experts like Fei-Fei Li argue that humanoid forms may not always be the most efficient design for robots, especially when considering specific task requirements in varied environments, such as underwater or aerial applications. Nonetheless, Adcock sees humanoid robots as vital for deploying Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), further driving their relevance in the tech ecosystem.
